[Purposes] This paper discusses the bibliometric characteristics, the evaluation, and applications of Journal Citation Indicator (JCI).
[Methods] We first introduced the concept, calculation method, and bibliometric characteristics of JCI and then carried out the empirical research with data in lnCites JCR.
[Findings] The citation time window, document type, and cited frequency adopted in the calculation of JCI are more reasonable than those for the calculation of impact factor. Moreover, the cited frequency is normalized to discipline, publication time, and document type so that it is more reasonable for the evaluation of the impact of academic journals, especially the evaluation of journals in different disciplines.
[Conclusions] JCI is superior to impact factor in the impact evaluation of academic journals, which is more applicable to interdisciplinary evaluation and more objective for assessing the development of Chinese scientific journals.
